since upgrading to OS XEl capitan 10.11.6 canon printers will not work

Hello Anyone,

I went to use my canon printers today, (canon pixma ip4000 & canon Pro9000 MKii) and the system would go to print and it would come up with printer is not connected message. The printers were turned on and they were connected to the system. I tried using both printers and couldn't get nothing printed out.

I uninstalled the printer and drivers and went to canon website to try downloading the drivers afresh, but had no luck.

One website I went to download the drivers etc detected that I was running OS XEl capitan 10.11.6 and said that there was no driver for this version available.

Could this be the reason I can't print because of the updated version of OS XEl capitan 10.11.6.

I haven't used my printers for a few months, but they were working fine last time.

Any help on the issue would be great.

Could not find any updates through the app store, and I was thinking of contacting canon about the issue.

I have uninstalled the drivers etc, and now I can't fined any that are compatible for the version I am running.

Found one for iP4000 and it would say it installed and went to restart system and the screen would go blank and blue and wouldn't shut down and restart, no matter how long you left it.

I though the up dated version may have contributed to the printers not working but wasn't sure as I am a novice with computers, but you have confirmed what I was thinking.

Unfortunately, the ip4000 printer dates back ~ 10 years and Canon stopped providing drivers for it with OS 10.6 and even those were the CUPS printer drivers. I think it is considered obsolete and Canon is no longer supporting it. Canon stopped providing drivers for your Pro9000 printer with OS 10.5.


The Apple Support site for printers Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac - Apple Support does not include a driver for the ip4000 but it does indicate that the Pro9000 is supported in the Mac OS built in driver.


It might be time for you to obtain a newer printer? Especially the ip4000, neither Canon nor Apple provide driver support for it any more.

I'm not sure what version of OS you were using before, but did you try downloading the latest drivers Canon has on their website for your printers? When I bought a new Mac about a year ago, my Canon IP4500 was no longer compatible. Apple said to get an updated driver from Canon, Canon said to get it from Apple. Someone told me to install the latest driver Canon had (might have been for Yosemite?) and that worked.
